Yeah, it's ironic that the Republican voters who are sceptical about Romney's social-conservative credentials should have gathered around Gingrich, who is hardly a poster-boy for traditional morality. The Lord loves a repentant sinner I guess.

I would normally say that what consenting adults do in their personal affairs is nobody's business but their own, but since Newt is very keen to tell the rest of us how we should live our lives I think his own peccadilloes are fair game for scrutiny.

I tried to friend you in FB - I too have my SL avi there and cannot quite figure out how to "make friends". Doesn't help that I don't care much for FB in the first place! Not wanting to be considered spam, per the message when I attempt to friend you (If you send a request to a stranger, it will be considered spam and your friend request will be blocked temporarily. Please only send this request if you know this user.) I thought I'd begin my quest here :)

The concept of "having to elect another people" has its literary history, of course but in Soviet history there is of course the story of Krupsakaya, Lenin's widow.

Apparently she became rather critical of the Bolsheviks after Lenin's death and Stalin said "We need another widow of Lenin."

There used to be this Linden, Lee Linden, who was extremely phlegmatic, shall we say.

I once complained to him personally about a sim that was lagging and running terribly with physics problems somewhere not visible perhaps, and this was back in the days when the FPS was calculated differently and Lindens were more reachable as it was smaller (5 years ago).

So he came to the sim to examine it and then said "It's running fine, there are no avatars on it." And I said, well, but we can't keep it that way, with no avatars on it. And I realized: the optimal state for the Linden Lab sim was a sim with no avatars on it, and they just run better that way.

The thing that I have to say about SL that noone else has,
is that for a chat program designed and supported by Europeans, is
that it's not bad. What makes it bad is that there are EU Linden
staff that don't know how to keep their personal feelings for
Americans out of complaint investigations. On numerous
investigations, I have been witness to complaints by Americans go
unnoticed by Harry Linden, a European Linden. Here are two examples
of two well known complaints that Linden Labs has failed to take
notice of: A complaint was submitted to Linden Labs when two German
players invaded and griefed a private sim. The harrasements
continued even despite the American owners' repeated complaints.
After about four more months of this, Harry Linden had put the two
American acccounts on hold until they provided a copy of their
identification. After they did so, the American accounts were
deleted and banned within two minutes after the information was
posted. An American man in SL named Bane Peccable had sent constant
complaints against a Canadian female named Stephanie Steamweaver.
His complaints consisted of his observations that she had violated
the Linden TOS on multiple occasions, encouraged others to violate
the Linden TOS, stalking, harrasement of all degrees, character
defemation, and giving out real world information. Once again, it
was Harry Linden who had taken the case. After putting Bane's
account on hold until he provided a copy of his identification.
Once again, this was done, and within minutes deleted and banned
Bane's account. Why? Because his identification identified him as
an American. So, still think the Lindens handle things in a fair
way? You might want to think again.

It's a question of democratic accountability.
I think the previous case was a classic one of something being obvious to the author but not to the reader, a failing of which I have been guilty often enough myself.

On the present matter, I strongly agree. I can see the argument for there being some secrets, but seeing as how secrecy is more often used as a tool of control than a tool of diplomacy, if my choice is between government-determined secrecy and transparency, I'll take the latter.

I'm more doubtful about the attacks on PayPal, et. al., largely because, as you say, it's unlikely to be any kind of sustained attack. My concern is that they will appear to be a threat to power - and thus justify more control and a less-free internet - without actually being one. Still, it was an effective short-term protest, so I'm sort of at sixes and sevens: For different reasons, I can't disapprove of them but I can't really approve of them, either.

I can accept that the tone was intended to be wistful if you can accept the possibility that it - well, it just didn't come off that way.

I completely agree with you that "It was a joke!" is not a verbal Get Out Of Jail Free card. At the same time, I remain very concerned that having someone fined for a "threat" not even addressed to the supposed target and which both airport security and the police say was not an actual threat is a very dangerous precedent. These things have a way of being built on.
